15 Inspiring Actresses Who Went Through Killer Training for their Role

Being an actress requires a lot of work and preparation. In order to look flawless on the big screen, they sometimes have to go through grueling workout regiments, working 24/7 to acquire new skills in a restricted amount of time.

The hard work pays off — these ladies steal our hearts and look absolutely fabulous in their roles! We at 5 Fun Facts have made a list of 15 gorgeous actresses who had to go through some seriously hardcore training for their roles. Prepare to be amazed!

Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman

Israeli beauty, Gal Gadot, has never had problems being overweight. Instead, she’s been skinny for her whole life. When cast in her career-changing role of Diana Prince in Wonder Woman, Gadot had to build up plenty of muscles. For nine months she exercised with one of the best trainers in Hollywood in order to get in shape for the hit Wonder Woman movie.

Gadot’s intensive training included two hours at the gym, two hours of fighting and another two hours of horseback riding. The result is impressive — the actress gained 17 pounds of muscle and she looks more gorgeous than ever!

Alicia Vikander, Tomb Raider

When Alicia was cast as Lara Croft for the 2018 movie, Tomb Raider, many fans were wondering how the actress would get into shape for the role of the famous adventure-seeker. After all, the previous performer of the role was none other than the gorgeously shaped and fit Angelina Jolie. It’s no wonder why Vikander began her killer training sessions to prepare for the role.

In addition to gym workouts, Alicia did a lot of cycling, martial arts, climbing and swimming. She gained 12 pounds of muscle and now looks perfect for the role. We can’t wait to see her on the screen!

Scarlett Johansson, Ghost in the Shell

Since her first appearance in the Marvel franchise as Black Widow in 2010, Scarlett Johansson had to stay toned and fit. But when she was cast as a cyber-enhanced soldier in Ghost in the Shell, Johansson started to double her activities in gym.

Not only did Johansson have to get her body into shape to look fabulous in that super tight-fitting costume of hers, but she also had to improve her fighting skills. We think she did a marvelous job!

Zoe Saldana, Avatar

Zoe Saldana’s performance in the iconic Avatar film was highly acclaimed both by critics and audiences. And we think she totally deserved that! Although we only got to see Saldana’s Neytiri character as a motion-captured animation model, the actress had to make some serious preparations for the role.

Saldana spent six months learning archery, horseback riding and martial arts. And she had to do all that while wearing a heavy head camera and an uncomfortable motion capture suit.

Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Back in 2011, Natalie Portman received an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Black Swan and it was totally deserved. The actress trained like a beast for the role of Nina in Darren Aronofsky’s film. Portman had to develop fierce ballet skills, so she spent a full year taking choreography classes — five hours a day, every day.

Once production started, Portman had to raise the number of hours dancing to an unbelievable sixteen hours a day! She also stayed on an ultra-restrictive diet, which resulted in her losing twenty pounds.

Alison Brie, GLOW

Alison Brie is the main star of Netflix’s hit TV-series about female wrestlers, GLOW. In order to get into shape for the role, Brie had to train like a professional fighter. She did cardio and strength training twice a day. Brie’s goal was not only to make her body look more fit, but also to become more resilient. She succeeded in both.

Uma Thurman, Kill Bill

The legendary Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill movies is a professional assassin, who could kill 50 men in a sword fight. To become this extraordinary character, Uma Thurman had to acquire a lot of new skills like several kung fu styles, different sword fighting styles, martial arts, knife throwing and knife fighting.

Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games

Rock climbing, tree climbing, boxing, running, vaulting, and archery — these are only some of the skills that Jennifer Lawrence had to learn for her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Her extreme training also included a big amount of cardio activities. The results were incredible — Jennifer looks stunning in that fiery costume of hers.

Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby

Hilary Swank had to work like a madwoman to get into shape for her role in Million Dollar Baby. Her entire day was planned from meals to workouts — even her sleep regiment was adjusted to her preparation. In order to gain muscle, Swank lifted weights six days a week and ate a lot of protein. As the result of these preparations, the actress gained 19 pounds of muscle and won herself her second Oscar.

Demi Moore, G.I. Jane

In 1997’s G. I. Jane, Demi Moore did most of her stunts herself, including the famous one-armed pushups. To be able to do this, Demi trained with a real Navy SEAL. Her workouts took place every day and included cardio and weightlifting.

Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knight Rises

2012 was undoubtedly a hard year for Anne Hathaway. For her Oscar-winning performance in Les Miserables, the actress had to lose 25 pounds. But right after that she started filming Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. In order to look perfect in a leather cat-suit, Hathaway did a lot of combat choreography, martial arts and yoga.

Sofia Boutella, Kingsman: The Secret Service

Sofia Boutella became famous after she appeared in Nike’s Keep Up commercial. A street dancer during her childhood, Sofia has always been in perfect shape. But even that wasn’t enough when she was cast for the role of a crazy assassin in 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. To prepare for the role, Boutella took taekwondo and Thai boxing classes for three months.

Michelle Rodriguez, Girlfight

Michelle Rodriguez started her acting career with the role of a troubled fighter in the 2000 movie, Girlfight. She prepared intensively for the movie, training two to six hours daily. A lot of weightlifting and protein consumption eventually led to her gain ten pounds of muscle. Ever since, Rodriguez has been one of the Hollywood’s most appreciated action-movie stars.

Charlize Theron, Atomic Blonde

In one of her latest movies, Atomic Blonde, the gorgeous Charlize Theron plays a top-level MI6 field agent. To look perfect on screen, Charlize trained for four hours a day. The preparation was so intense that the actress cracked two teeth during her training.

Taraji P. Henson, Proud Mary

Taraji P. Henson is one strong woman! Being 47 years old didn’t stop her from doing most of the stunts in the 2018 action movie, Proud Mary herself. Her hardcore trainings for the role included hours of gym workouts and combat training. We owe some serious respect to the gorgeous Taraji!
